Texas Highway Dept and Booze
Something else strange and rather spooky: 2,366 was the population of
my home town in Texas. I remember the sign at the city limit as if it
were yesterday. "Calvert, Pop. 2,366". Just beyond that, going the
other way, was a sign that said "Hearne, 7 mi." I rode my horse along
that road to Hearne one hot summer's day, and it gave me a new
appreciation for why most people never got more than 20 miles from
home before the automobile.
